@PSky, thank you for the suggestion. I would check out the Cosmopolitan Bakery and Cafe. I would love to get the real doner -- not industrially pressed loaf.

For actual Doner try Cosmopolitan Bakery and Cafe on Kings Highway in Alexandria. Its Balkan but have recently added a lot of Turkish dishes. I have seen the spit, its assembled individual pieces of meat, not a pressed preformed loaf.

I much prefer Kabob Bazaar or Shamshirry (Tysin's, but the pilafs are the main draw)to Moby Dick. all3 are Persian.

Ravi is good but I usually get the Lamb Karachi, which is not a kabob.

For shwarma try Shwarma King on Columbia in Adams Morgan. i bet its not prefab.

You will find pan shwarma a lot...theres a turkish place in Vienna that has it and doner. Nizam's? Can't vouch for it but it is not a dive.

Lebanese Butcher and restaurant in FC has 2 kinds of shwarma (one is chicken) and i bet they make it themselves. they are a butcher shop too.
